An update from Detmold Medical: Thanks to our staff

Just one year ago the Detmold Group answered a call from State and Federal Government to build local medical mask manufacturing capability in South Australia. In just 18 weeks Detmold Medical commenced supply of surgical face masks to protect medical and front-line workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, the great success of Australia’s COVID-19 response means that requirements for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are rapidly reducing, and operations will be scaled down. This means some people, who are employed via labour hire companies, will work their last shift next week.

Detmold Medical would like to thank all staff and suppliers who have worked incredibly hard over the past 12 months to support Australia’s successful COVID-19 response. Their efforts have contributed to the Detmold Group’s ability to protect Australians, their families and communities every day.

The localisation of face mask manufacture is an excellent example of an effective partnership between SA Health, the Commonwealth and private enterprise. The project has had a positive impact on the community, the economy, and an extended supply chain of local manufacturers and suppliers.

Whilst the initial phase of the mission is nearing completion, Detmold Medical is focused on continuing to build a sustainable, globally competitive, medical manufacturing business to continue alongside its core packaging operations.

The Detmold Group is working hard to preserve sovereign capability for PPE and will continue to invest to support its customers.

Employers have a legal duty under WHS legislation to eliminate or minimise risks, such as airborne hazards. Within the hierarchy of controls, personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) are often used as a last resort to protect workers from inhaling harmful airborne particles. With this in mind, it’s essential to ensure that the PPE you select provides adequate protection against the hazards and risks you’ve identified through a thorough risk assessment.

High-stress environments such as ICU wards, aged care facilities, and emergency departments demand more than just clinical capability. They require robust personal protective equipment (PPE) systems that safeguard both physical and psychosocial well-being. In these settings, PPE is not merely a physical barrier against harm; it also plays a critical role in protecting workers from psychosocial risk.

Face masks and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) are critical in protecting healthcare workers, safety officers, and the wider community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they became an essential tool in reducing the spread of infection. Their importance has continued well beyond the peak of the pandemic as face masks remain a common precaution on public transport, during flu season, and in other high-risk environments, reinforcing their place in everyday health and safety practices.
